Paul is a marine scientist and underwater photographer. He is a graduate of the University of Auckland and time spent at the Leigh Marine Laboratory which led to a PhD in reef fish ecology. Northern New Zealand's diverse kelp forests were also where he cut his teeth into underwater photography. He has since dove around the world from cold temperate seas to the tropics and open ocean environments.

Paul has just returned from nearly five years in the US, working for both the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), which included a range of marine science experience, including working on deep sea fish from the mesopelagic zone. Paul is widely published as an underwater photographer, with articles and images published in various popular press. Including New Zealand Geographic, the New York Times, Save Our Seas, Oceanographic, Alert Diver, is a regular contributor to Dive Pacific and a collaborator with Cinematic Science.

He is a firm believer that people care about what they see and know. Photography thereby is a powerful conservation tool to bring the marine world to the collective consciousness.
