Environmental education

Te aki i te hunga tangata te tiaki inanga... Whitebait Connection provides an inquiry and action based environmental education programme for schools and communities focusing on the health of our streams, rivers and wetlands

Slide 1
Action outcomes

Participants are inspired to take action for their local catchment including riparian restoration, fencing, stream monitoring, writing letters to government and stream/river clean ups.

Slide 1
Community engagement

Since 2002, we have been raising awareness of the effects of land-use on the health of our streams, rivers, estuaries and the sea, using whitebait as a medium.

Slide 1
Conservation Action

As well as supporting communities to take action for freshwater, we sometimes help to lead this action in the form of water quality monitoring, whitebait spawning habitat surveys, habitat enhancement or creation, riparian planting, fencing and pest control, fish passage barrier identification, and stormwater litter monitoring.

Otamatea High School Programme, 2022

The year 9 science classes at Otamatea High School had a great time learning about freshwater in term 4 of 2022 as part of their taiao kaupapa delivered by Environs Te Uri o Hau the environmental arm of the local hapū Te Uri O Hau Settlement Trust.

Patricia from Whitebait Connection collaborated with the Ngā Maunga Tapu team from Environs Te Uri O Hau to deliver the freshwater component of this kaupapa. Students tested water quality at the awa in the community walkway near school and observed fish species including īnanga, yellow eye mullet and invasive gambusia.

The students worked with Shaun Holland from Kaipara Pest Free to then take action with possum control by the awa. Thanks goes to Shaun Holland and the Ngā Maunga Tapu team from Te Uri O Hau for collaborating on this programme.
