The Stream Health Monitoring & Assessment Kit (SHMAK) provides practical tools and resources for land owners, iwi/hapū, schools and community groups to monitor the ecological health of Aotearoa New Zealand's streams.
To further support groups in becoming SHMAK practitioners and using the kit with confidence, our national network of SHMAK trainers is able to provide guidance and training to groups wishing to use the kit. The SHMAK training endorsement programme has been developed through a collaboration between Whitebait Connection, NIWA, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Mountains To Sea Wellington and the National Advisory Group for Freshwater Citizen Science (NAG-FS) and has been brought to live in 2021.
Our current trainers are already based in a number of regions across Aotearoa New Zealand, but we hoping we can scale things up in the future to reach even more communities, so please keep an eye out for updates. Please also note that the support your regional trainer can provide you with is subject to available funding, but we are actively working towards resourcing our trainers long-term.
