Overall there were 17 classes who participated in the WBC programme in 2009. Bohally Intermediate with 16 classes and one class at Westmount College.
2009 Highlights
Planting was undertaken at the Onamalutu Scenic Reserve where classes
were involved in riparian planting next to a swampy stream. The reserve
was used quite often by Ali Kay for the delivery of the programme. These children were also involved in the original potting up of the plants from our shadehouse.
This is also occuring at the Grovetown School where children have potted
up native trees from root trainers into PB 5's which will be planted at
the Grovetown Lagoons during Conservation Week.
Ali has also been involved with the Marlborough District Council in the development of other education projects as well.
In South Marlborough the Department of Conservation now has two Community Relations Rangers who, as part of their job, deliver educational programmes to schoolchildren, one in Renwick and the other based in Kaikoura. Both Rangers are familiar with the WBC concept and principles and have experienced hands on delivery to school classes.
Local ranger staff in Kaikoura are delivering the WBC programme in 2010.
